Smoke from wood heaters is among the largest contributors to air pollution-related illness and earlier than expected death in Australia.
Wood heater pollution is linked to an estimated 720 premature deaths in Australia every year, at an annual cost of more than $3 billion. That is more smoke-related harm than the unprecedented 2019-20 bushfire season.
This webinar features researchers and community leaders working to reduce the health impacts of smoke pollution through cleaner heating:
- Dr Penelope Jones is Senior Research Fellow in Environmental Health at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research.
- Kristian Mikhael, designer, communications professional and PhD candidate at the Menzies Institute for Medical Research.
- Dr Barbara Wake AM, retired senior academic and community health advocate.
The speakers will explain the health impact of wood heaters and provide evidence-based insights into ways to improve the air and health through cleaner heating.
The webinar will be Chaired by Centre for Safe Air chief investigator, Professor Geoff Morgan (University of Sydney).
